Day 5 – Hospital de Orbigo to Astorga

We walked another 15 km into Astorga yesterday. Many pilgrims passed us with a hearty “buen camino!” People in Astorga are well dressed in comparison to the pilgrims we found limping through the central square. For this leg we took the shorter route along the highway – which to me was just as picturesque as the detours through farm fields walked previously.

There are two buildings by Gaudi in Astorga, one of which looks like the Disney castle.

There is also a large amount of black birds swooping through the skies of each of these towns.

We’re moving out of the dry plateau and taking a bus in the morning for the next 50 km, over the mountains, into a town called Ponferrada to rest and recuperate for a day. One hour of bus = three days of walking! But first, there’s dinner.
