La Virgen del Camino santuario, where, according to Lonely Planet, the Virgin appeared in front of a shepherd in 1506, and asked him to build a shrine.20120619-160649.jpg

We grabbed the last room in an alberge called Tio Pepe, in Villar de Mazarife. Here is a church across the street from our hostel, where you will see impressively giant stork nests on the belfry.

This first part of our route started in the city, passed industrial buildings and became more rural near the end. It’s a very dusty, dry area, as we’re passing through the paramo (desert) on our way out of the plateau.
